How to Keep Your Home Pest-Free Year Round

There are many ways that you can be attracting pests to your home without even knowing it. Just because you have yet to see a cockroach or other pest inside your house doesn’t mean that you don’t need to do anything. It might be too late once you see your first pest, as that almost always means that there are more hiding in your home somewhere. Here are some tips to help you keep your home pest-free all year round.

Check for Holes Where Pests Might Enter

It is important that you make sure that your home has 100 percent impenetrable walls and surfaces. Just because you notice there are no cracks or holes to be found around your home, doesn’t mean that they could not appear tomorrow. With that said, do an investigation once every three months for any possible holes in your roof, siding and walls. With even the tiniest cracks, it can be possible for an animal or insect to enter and make a nest.

If you notice a crack or hole somewhere outside the home, be sure to have that mistake taken care of as soon as possible, in one way or another.

Store Firewood Away from The Home

Firewood is what you need to enjoy a fire every now and then, whether in a fireplace or outside. Firewood that you are storing, however, is a haven for insect pests. Firewood piles make for surefire places for pests to breed, because not only does wood provide moisture, but it also provides darkness for insects to hide in. With that said, store firewood as far away from the outside of your house as possible.

Clean Your Kitchen

A dirty kitchen to a pest is like a room full of treasures. With that in mind, try to clean the kitchen as often as possible. This means you should vacuum, mop and/or sweep the floors, wash the dishes and ensure a space that is almost completely crumb-free for the smallest chance of attracting pests. If you have any bags or containers of food, even pet food, be sure to keep them closed, so the food’s aroma does not reach any pests.
