Tips for Controlling Pests in the Winter

Pests like to take refuge in the warmth of people’s homes when the temperatures drop. So, there is a good chance you will see an uptick in the number of pests around your house. Here are some great tips for managing pests in the winter. Seal Cracks and Holes

Bugs and other pests can enter your house through the smallest cracks and holes. Before the weather gets too cold, carefully inspect the foundation and the bottom portion of your home’s exterior and seal up any cracks and holes you see. Do not forget to check the areas where utilities and pipes enter the house, as they are common areas for cracks to form, and rodents can come through a hole as small as a dime.

Store Firewood Away From the House

A warm crackling fire is always welcoming on a cold winter’s night. But, the pile of wood you have stored near your back door is a welcome mat for pests. Ants and other creatures like to burrow in wood piles, and they are hard to see. If the wood is close to the house, it is easy for them to scurry inside without being seen. Once they are there, they are difficult to get rid of. Storing your wood away from the house will reduce the likelihood that bugs will travel from the wood into your home. If possible, store your wood at least five feet off the ground to further prevent infestation from bugs.

Eliminate Moisture

Like all living creatures, pests need water to survive. In the winter, it can be hard to find, so they will be attracted to any source of moisture they can find. Look for and fix any leaking pipes and clogged drains. Also, be on the lookout for any moisture accumulation in your kitchen and bathrooms, as these areas are vulnerable to a cockroach infestation.

Remove Clutter

It is easy to accumulate clutter around the house, especially in the winter. But, something as seemingly harmless as letting newspapers and magazines stack up around the house can easily attract bugs. Rodents and bugs can hide in the clutter, especially if they are trying to stay warm. You may never realize they are there until it becomes a problem. So, keep everything organized and off the floor.

Call a Professional

Sometimes your best defense against winter pests is a strong offense. Calling in a professional pest control company can ensure that your home is free from pests, even when you cannot see them. If you suspect you have a bug problem, or see evidence of pests in your home, call a professional and have the problem taken care of immediately.
